We won!

Amazing news this week: we won Best Community Project at the OCVA Awards on Tuesday evening! Cafe Manager Beth was there to receive our glass trophy which is now sitting proudly on the counter. Well done to everyone who supports the project – whether as a volunteer or customer. It is testament to your support that we have been able to achieve so much.

It is great to be back open in the week with our new chiller installed – we now have plenty of chilled wines, beers and juices ready for the warmer days and are now stocking lemons and oranges in there too. The new chiller also means we can sell a wider range of meat during the week – look out for Coopers fantastic sausages, bacon and more in the shop from now on. Another new addition this week to our offering is postage stamps – you – no excuse to miss a birthday now!

This Saturday we are having our Spring Craft & Farmers Market with lots of lovely stalls – Mags Cuttle will have a special on bowls this weekend as well as some new cups made by Matty Cuttle! We’ll also have soccatots with Nick at 8:30am – hopefully outside!

Taste our wines next Thursday

It has been great to be back open this week – with our new chiller and counter installed. We have lots of lovely chilled wine, beer and juices in our fridge now – ready for those summer evenings.

Talking of wine, our Wine Tasting evening is coming up next Thursday evening, 6.30-7.30pm. Ever wondered what some of the wines we sell at Talking Shop taste like? Here’s your chance! Tom, from The Oxford Wine Company, will be joining us for a fun & relaxed evening to share tastings & information about 4 wines. We’ll have some tasty nibbles to go along! Tickets £5 each. Buy tickets at Talking Shop!! Over 18 event.

At the market this week regular volunteer, Abi Reynolds, is offering the chance for kids to decorate their own calico shopping bag. Don’t miss out! You can then fill it up with lots of goodies from the market!

You can also treat your face to a spring uplift at Hazel stall of Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic this weekend. Here are a few words from Hazel about what is on offer:

As spring days arrive with longer daylight, it’s a good time to treat your face to a deep cleanse or polish and moisturise or spritz to nourish the skin.

Exciting developments whilst we close 24-28 April

Exciting news! We are getting a new chiller, counter and (hopefully!) freezer installed next week so we can sell an even wider range of goods. This means we need to close next week – from Monday 24th to Friday 28th April. The work required to put in the new counter is extensive so we had no choice but to close whilst this great work takes place.

We will however be open for our market as usual both this Saturday and next. Please come and support the market whilst the shop is closed.

Asparagus in now!

OldFarmShopAsparagus.png

Experiencing the change in the seasons is one of the joys of having a close relationship with our local producers so it was a great pleasure to hear from Caroline at the Old Farm Shop in Harwell (who used to supply our eggs) earlier this week to hear she had some asparagus for us. If you enjoy these slender vegetables pop in today before we close at 6.30pm and pick some up. They look super tasty. Perfect dipped in a soft boiled egg for a special Good Friday breakfast.

We are closed tomorrow for Good Friday and on Easter Monday next week. We are very much open for our market on Saturday though – see the nice mix of guest stalls below. Then next Wednesday is our Food Surplus Café.

Exciting news! We are getting a big chiller, new freezer and counter installed the week after next. This will mean we can sell an even wider range of goods. But we need to close for a bit to allow this to happen so we will be closed Monday 24 – Friday 28 April. We will be open for the market on Saturday 29th April as usual. This also means there will be no Knit and Stitch Group both next Monday and the following Monday. Make sure to stock up on your eggs, bacon and other Talking Shop essentials over the next week!

Spring bursts into the kitchen

GardenTeam1.JPGSpring has burst into the kitchen this week here at Talking Shop as we have brilliantly been able to start using produce from the garden in our weekday lunch menu. This week’s salads were made using leaves and herbs grown by the Garden Team! Huge thanks to everyone in the team who have worked so hard through the winter as well as over these sunnier days to make the space such a blooming productive patch of land.

Easter Opening Hours: We will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday but open as usual for our market on Saturday 15th April.

Advance notice of temporary weekday closure: we will be closed from Monday 24th – Friday 28th April whilst we have a new counter, chiller and freezer installed. This is a really exciting change to the space which will allow us to stock a wider range of goods. Let us know what you would like to see in the new fridge and freezer!

Come and see our new workshop

It’s so great to see the garden being used now that the sun is shining and our flowers are blooming. Come and see our new workshop tomorrow or on Saturday which has been built this week and is looking great. This will be used by both our gardening team and our bike team (who are with us for the first time this year on Saturday).

It’s a great market this week. Lots of excellent guest stalls as well as our own usual shop and general stall range. The marmite and cheese bread is back this week – arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Lunch Club is on next Wednesday. See details below for how to book in. The usual café lunch will now also be available on Lunch Club Wednesdays too.

Soul food and socca fun

Thanks to everyone that came to our Spring Party last Thursday. It was great to have so many of our brilliant suppliers, volunteers and customers all together enjoying some delicious food made by the team. We have already got in a few of the things which people fed back that they enjoyed. Did you like the Oxford Sauce cheese or the bubbly we had on offer? You can find them both on the shelves as of tomorrow. If there are other things you have since thought you would love to see on the shop’s shelves drop an email to Richard at richard.talkingshop@gmail.com

It’s a great market on Saturday. We have a new trader with us in Nourish Soul Food plus a few favourite craft stalls. A great time to pick up some gifts and cards. Nick of Socca Buddiez is back 8.30-9am. He runs a fun session for 2-6 year olds (and parents) to help promote confidence, coordination & ability to play in a team. A great way to get the weekend off to a good start for any hyper-energetic kids!

Finally, would you like to bake with us? We are looking for volunteers to join us once a fortnight to help to bake up the delicious cakes and scones we serve in the cafe. It’s a great opportunity to build your skills and confidence in the kitchen or, if you are a confident baker, a wonderful way to share your skills with someone who wants to learn. We will train you and you could do the Level 2 accredited Food Safety & Hygiene with us.
